What thickness and density are recommended for ceiling and wall panel applications?
Sep 11, 2026
Products Description
Typical recommendations for YUPSENI PVC foam board used as ceiling and wall panels:

Short answer
For normal indoor ceilings: 5 mm, 0.5–0.6 g/cm³
For indoor wall panels: 5–8 mm, 0.55–0.7 g/cm³
Notes:
Thinner than 3 mm is not recommended for YUPSENI ceiling or wall panels because it may warp or sag.
For ceilings, support/joist spacing should usually be 300–600 mm. If the span is larger, increase thickness and density.
Use a fire-retardant grade for ceilings and wall panels, especially in commercial or public projects.
Exact choice depends on span, support system, indoor/outdoor use, surface finish, and local fire codes.

How to understand thickness and density
Thickness
3 mm: Only for fully supported decorative wall cladding or very small ceiling panels. It may warp or sag if used over a large span.
5 mm: The most common thickness for residential ceilings and wall panels. Good balance between weight, cost, and rigidity.
6–8 mm: Suitable for larger ceiling panels, partitions, feature walls, and areas requiring better flatness.
10–12 mm: Used for commercial ceilings, high-rigidity partitions, and heavy-duty wall panels.
15 mm and above: Special applications, such as industrial partitions or high-impact areas. Not usually necessary for normal ceilings or walls.
Density
0.35–0.45 g/cm³: Very light, good thermal insulation, but low strength. Only for fully supported decorative panels.
0.45–0.60 g/cm³: General indoor ceiling and wall panels. Good cost-performance.
0.60–0.75 g/cm³: Better rigidity, screw holding, and resistance to deformation. Recommended for larger panels, partitions, and wet areas.
0.75–0.95 g/cm³: High strength and durability, but heavier and more expensive. Used for high-impact or commercial applications.
Key factors affecting the choice
Span and support spacing: The larger the unsupported span, the thicker and denser the board should be. For ceilings, keep joist spacing at 300–600 mm. For 5 mm board, use 300–400 mm spacing. For 8–10 mm board, 400–600 mm is usually acceptable.
Indoor vs. outdoor: Standard PVC foam board is mainly for indoor use. For outdoor or semi-outdoor applications, use UV-resistant and weather-resistant grades.
Wet areas: Bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms need closed-cell PVC foam board with higher density for better moisture resistance.
Fire safety: For ceilings and wall panels in public buildings, choose fire-retardant grade B1, M1, or equivalent. Standard PVC foam board may be flammable or only B2 grade.
Surface treatment: Laminated, UV-printed, coated, or hot-stamped boards may require slightly higher density to maintain flatness and adhesion.
Installation method: Fully glued thin panels can use lower density. Mechanically fixed or suspended panels need higher density and thickness.

Installation recommendations
Ceiling installation
Use a light steel keel or treated wood frame.
Recommended keel spacing:
3–5 mm board: 300–400 mm
5–6 mm board: 400–500 mm
8–10 mm board: 500–600 mm
Leave a 3–5 mm expansion gap at edges because PVC expands with temperature.
Pre-drill screw holes to avoid cracking. Do not over-tighten screws.
Use matching trims or H-profiles for seams.
Wall panel installation
Ensure the substrate is flat, dry, and clean.
For thin panels (3–5 mm), use full-surface construction adhesive.
For thicker panels (6–12 mm), use adhesive plus mechanical fixings such as screws and plugs.
In wet areas, seal joints with silicone or waterproof trim.
Leave expansion gaps at corners and edges.
Quick summary
Residential ceiling: 5–6 mm, 0.50–0.65 g/cm³, fire-retardant recommended.
Residential wall panel: 5–8 mm, 0.50–0.65 g/cm³.
Partition / feature wall: 8–12 mm, 0.60–0.75 g/cm³.
Bathroom / kitchen ceiling or wall: 5–10 mm, 0.60–0.75 g/cm³, closed-cell, moisture-proof.
Commercial / public project: 8–12 mm, 0.65–0.80 g/cm³, B1 fire rating.
