The click-lock joint is the part of an SPC floor that does the real work. It is also the part that most often fails - and almost always for reasons you can see before installation.
Ask a floor installer what goes wrong with SPC and they will not talk about the wear layer. They will talk about the joints. A gap that opens between planks, a corner that pops up, a subtle creak when you walk across it - these are the complaints that actually get a floor replaced under warranty.
Most of these problems are not mysterious. They are predictable, and they can be spotted long before the plank goes down. This guide looks at what a lock must do, why it fails, and how to tell a well-made SPC plank apart from a cheap one.
I. The Joint Is the Product
SPC is a floating floor. It is not glued down and it is not nailed. The only thing holding the whole surface together is the lock running along each plank edge. If that lock is weak or the tolerances are loose, the floor is only as strong as its weakest connection.
That makes joint quality far more important than it looks. Two planks can have identical surface and core thickness, yet one holds a tight seam across a room and the other develops visible gaps within a year. The difference is in the geometry of the lock and the consistency with which it is cut.
II. A Tale of Two Locking Profiles
Broadly, SPC locks come in two styles. The first is an angle-and-tap lock, where you drop one plank into the long edge of the next at an angle and tap it flat. The second is a drop-lock, where the plank clicks straight down into place.
Neither is inherently superior. What matters is the precision of the profile. A well-engineered lock has a precise mating surface, a clean undercut, and a consistent depth across the whole edge. A poorly made one has a rough, uneven cut that produces a loose fit and, eventually, a visible seam.
The angle lock is generally easier to handle in long rows, while the drop-lock is quicker for a less experienced team. But the more useful question is not which style - it is whether the lock holds without pulling apart under normal foot traffic.
III. Why Planks Pop, Gap, and Lift
A joint fails for one of four reasons, and most are visible before the plank is ever installed.
- Loose production tolerance - If the lock is cut inconsistently from plank to plank, some joints fit tightly and others sit loose. The loose ones are the first to open.
- Plank warping - A plank with a slight bow or twist will not sit flush. It lifts at one end and forces the joint open.
- Forced installation - Tapping a plank in with too much force, or forcing it into place, can damage the lock and leave the joint compromised.
- No expansion gap - A floating floor needs room to move. If the planks are pinned against the wall or a fixed object, thermal movement has nowhere to go and the joints are pushed apart.

IV. What the Subfloor Has to Do With It
A lock is only as good as the surface it sits on. The floor underneath must be flat, dry, and free of debris. High spots and low spots are the hidden cause of a lot of joint problems.
A plank bridging a low spot will flex under footfall. That movement is exactly what pulls a joint apart over time. Similarly, a soft or uneven underlayment can let a plank flex and pop. The answer is to level the subfloor before the floor goes down - not to hope the lock holds the surface rigid on its own.

V. Reading a Plank Before You Buy
The best time to judge a lock is before the cartons are opened on site. A few simple checks tell you more than a spec sheet.
- Look at the profile - A clean, uniform cut along the whole edge is a good sign. Rough, uneven, or chipped edges suggest poor machining.
- Click two planks together - They should mate with a tight, even fit and stay flat. If one end sits proud or the seam rocks, the tolerance is off.
- Check the back - A consistent core and backing with no visible air pockets suggests a stable plank.
- Compare planks across cartons - Lay several planks side by side. If they vary in thickness or bow, the batch is inconsistent and joints will suffer.

VI. Fitting It Right the First Time
A well-made lock still needs correct installation. Leave the perimeter expansion gap, keep rows offset so joints do not line up, use the right tapping tool, and avoid forcing a plank into position.
None of this is exotic. It is the difference between a floor that looks good on the day it goes down and one that still looks good five years later. A plank that clicks together cleanly and is installed on a flat subfloor with proper gaps is unlikely to develop a visible seam at all.
