A test report is a snapshot of one batch under one set of conditions. Read the conditions, and the number becomes useful.
A buyer receives a test report, sees a table of numbers, and the conversation tends to stop at "quality looks fine." That is a mistake. Almost nobody reads the report as it was intended to be read - as a statement about a specific batch of material under a specific set of conditions, rather than a general certificate of goodness.
When you are sourcing PVC foam board or any extruded profile, the test report is not paper. It is the only document where the factory's claims become numbers you can compare across suppliers. This guide explains what the key parameters actually mean, so you can read a report and decide.
I. A Test Report Is a Contract, Not a Brochure
The first thing to understand is what a test report is not. It is not a promise of how every future batch will behave. It is a record of how one batch performed, tested against a specific standard, on a specific date, in a specific condition.
That means a report is only as valuable as the conditions it was tested under. A density reading taken on a sample carved from the edge of a sheet tells you little about the sheet's interior. An impact test run at 23°C tells you little about how the same board behaves at minus ten.
II. Density: The Number That Explains Every Other Number
For a cellular PVC board, density is the master parameter. It is measured in kilograms per cubic meter, and it explains more about the product than any other single number. Density determines how much resin is in a sheet, which determines its cost, its rigidity, its weight, and how it takes a printed image or a routed edge.

This is why the four key indicators for selecting PVC foam board always start with density. It is the number both parties can agree on, because it is the least subjective. If you order a 0.65 density board and the supplier ships 0.58, you can measure it in your own warehouse with a scale and a calliper. Nobody has to argue about feel.
III. Impact Resistance: What a Falling Weight Actually Tells You
The drop-dart impact test drops a weighted dart onto a clamped sample and records the energy at which the board fails. The result is expressed in joules. It is one of the most misinterpreted numbers in a plastics report, because people read it as "how strong is this board."
It is actually a measurement of brittleness. A high impact value means the board absorbs energy before it breaks - it is tough and flexible. A low value means the board fails quickly - it is brittle. For an outdoor PVC profile or a board that will be handled in cold weather, the impact value matters a great deal. For a printed display board that sits indoors, it matters far less than the surface quality.
Crucially, impact performance is temperature-dependent. A board that is tough at room temperature can become brittle at minus five. If your application involves cold climates, ask for the impact value tested at low temperature, not only at 23°C.
IV. Fire Rating: A Menu, Not a Verdict
A fire rating on a PVC product (such as a B1 or B2 classification in many jurisdictions) is often treated as a badge of safety. It is not that simple. A fire rating is a statement about how a material behaves in a standardized test - how much heat it releases, how fast flames spread, how much smoke it generates. It is a tool for controlling a fire, not a guarantee that a fire will not start.
What most buyers do not realize is that the fire rating requirement depends entirely on the application. A ceiling panel in a school corridor and a display board in a temporary exhibition booth are held to completely different standards. So when you read a fire rating, ask not whether it is "good" but whether it is appropriate for the location where the material will be installed.
V. Flexural & Tensile: How a Board Bends Without Breaking
Flexural strength measures how much a board can bend under load before it breaks. Tensile strength measures how much pulling force a board resists before it tears. Together, these two numbers describe the structural personality of the material.
For a board that will carry weight - a shelf, a cabinet door, a sign mounted horizontally over a span - flexural strength is the number to check. For a board that will be screwed onto a frame and expected to hold, tensile strength and screw-retention matter more. A high flexural value with a low tensile value can indicate a board that is stiff but prone to cracking at the fasteners. A board with the opposite profile may be flexible but sag under a load.
Neither number is "better." They describe different trades. The question is which combination matches your application.
VI. The Five Questions That Turn a Report Into a Decision
A test report is only useful if you know what to ask about it. Before you accept a report as evidence of quality, ask these five questions:
- Which batch does this report correspond to? A report from last year tells you nothing about the board in your container.
- What are the test conditions? Temperature, humidity, and specimen location all change the result.
- What is the density value? This is the anchor that explains every other number.
- Which version of the standard was used? Standards get revised, and different versions give different tolerances.
- How often is the report regenerated? A serious factory re-tests per batch, not once a year.
