How to design an SPC quartz-vinyl joint between rooms?

May 28, 2024

To make the floor pleasing to the eye, it is important to choose not only a beautiful pattern, but also to take care of the evenness of the coating. And if this is relatively easy to do in one room, then difficulties arise when moving from one room to another. We talk about options for connecting coverings from different rooms and how to do it in the most aesthetic way.

Rules for joining coatings

There must be a thermal gap between the two coatings - a small empty space given over to the horizontal expansion of the floor. As the temperature rises, the floor covering will expand, and if there is no thermal gap, then both coverings will begin to deform from strong pressure on each other.

The size of the gap depends on what type of second material it is: static or free-standing.

Static ones include porcelain stoneware and tiles. The gap between quartz vinyl and static material must be at least 5 mm. Free-standing materials include parquet boards and laminate. The gap between quartz-vinyl and free-lying material must be at least 10 mm.

For aesthetics and convenience, both materials must be on the same level, which can be difficult to do if there is quartz vinyl in one room and, say, porcelain stoneware in another. Porcelain stoneware has an average coating thickness of 10 mm, while quartz vinyl has an average thickness of 5 mm. To "raise" quartz vinyl, you can use a self-leveling floor.

Coating joining options

There are three options for joining coverings from different rooms:

Docking using thresholds or joining profiles.
Joining using sealant.
Docking using cork expansion joints.

Sealant and cork expansion joints require both coverings to be at the same level, which can be achieved with a self-leveling floor. Sealant is more preferable because it can be matched to the color of the floor, moreover, it compensates for the thermal expansion of the coating and prevents cracks from appearing.

Thresholds and connecting profiles are also a good option. The thresholds cover the gap and leave free space for thermal expansion of the coatings. Moreover, unlike sealants and cork expansion joints, with the help of some thresholds and joining profiles, the difference between the levels of coatings can be neglected.
