SPC Vinyl Flooring Planks - Five-Layer Construction, Plank Sizes and Wear Layer Options
An SPC vinyl plank is not one material. It is five layers bonded under heat and pressure, and every one of them can be specified at a different level. The wear layer decides how long the pattern survives. The core decides how rigid the floor feels and how well it resists indentation. The backing decides how much impact noise reaches the room below. Buying on thickness alone leaves four of those five decisions unmade.

What Is Inside an SPC Vinyl Plank
Five layers, stacked in order. Four of them are bonded into the plank and cannot be changed after manufacture, which is why the specification has to be settled before the order rather than after the delivery.
UV coating - the top layer
A cured resin layer that seals the surface. It carries stains and everyday scuffing so the printed design beneath does not have to, and it contains UV absorbers that slow colour shift in rooms with strong daylight. No waxing or polishing is required at any point in the floor's life.
Wear layer - the layer that is measured
A transparent film of known thickness, and the single most important number on a flooring quotation. This plank is offered at 0.3mm and 0.5mm. The wear layer is what grit and footfall actually abrade, so it sets the service life far more directly than core thickness does.
Decorative layer - the printed film
A printed PVC film carrying the wood, stone or tile design. Two things separate a convincing print from an obvious one: the resolution of the image, and whether the embossed texture is registered to the printed grain. When they are out of register, the plank looks printed at close range no matter how good the pattern is.
SPC core - the structural layer
Limestone powder, PVC resin and stabilisers, fused into a rigid board at roughly 2.0 g/cm³. Density is what gives the floor its stability and its resistance to indentation from furniture legs. A core below the usual range feels softer underfoot and dents more readily, which is why the figure belongs on the quotation.
Backing layer - the optional one
An IXPE foam pad available at 1.0mm, 1.5mm or 2.0mm, pre-attached at the factory. It softens impact noise and takes some of the hardness out of the surface underfoot. It is the only layer of the five that can be varied without changing anything else, so it is worth treating as a separate line on the order.

Standard format
The default for residential work. The proportions read as a timber board at normal viewing distance and cover a room without excessive cutting at the edges. Suits living rooms, bedrooms and open-plan areas.
935 x 144 mm
Compact format
A shorter, narrower plank that suits small rooms, hallways and stairs where a full-length board would produce a disproportionate amount of waste. Custom sizes are available on volume orders.
Format is often treated as a cosmetic choice. It is not. A long plank in a small room makes the floor look busy and drives the offcut percentage up, because the last board in every row has to be cut back. A short plank in a large open area creates a constantly repeating pattern that becomes obvious once the furniture is in. The right answer is usually determined by the dimensions of the largest continuous space on the project, not by preference.
Wear Layer, IXPE Pad and Density - the Three Numbers on a Quote
A quotation that lists only thickness and colour has left the actual performance open. These three figures are the ones that determine what the floor will be like after five years, and all three are legitimately variable on the same nominal product.

If a project has both a residential and a commercial area, the usual approach is one specification throughout with the wear layer stepped up in the public sections. Keeping the same core and pad across the whole job means the floor height stays consistent at doorways, which avoids a threshold strip at every transition. The density figure is quoted in grams per cubic centimetre because that is how the core is measured in a laboratory. Some suppliers state it as tonnes per cubic metre instead, which is the same number expressed differently. Neither is wrong, but a quotation that omits the figure entirely is telling you the core density has not been controlled to a target, and that is what causes one container to feel different underfoot from the next.

Living rooms, bedrooms and open-plan areas where the floor needs to read as timber without the maintenance of timber. The plank is non-porous, so a spill in a kitchen or bathroom is wiped rather than chased.

Commercial interiors
Shopping centres, hotel lobbies and exhibition spaces. The click system removes the need for adhesive, which shortens the installation window and means a unit can be handed back the same week it is floored.

Public buildings
Schools, clinics and offices, where a wipeable surface with no grout lines is easier to keep clean and where replacement of a single damaged plank is a maintenance task rather than a refurbishment.

Light industrial and technical spaces
Workshops, laboratories and back-of-house areas where resistance to indentation and to common chemicals matters more than appearance. Specify the 0.5mm wear layer for these locations.
Pattern and Colour Display
Register between print and texture is the detail to check on a sample. Run a fingertip across the grain and look along the direction of the light: on a good plank, the raised texture follows the dark lines of the print rather than sitting across them at an angle. On a poor one, the two are independent and the effect becomes obvious as soon as the floor is viewed from an angle. What are SPC vinyl flooring planks made of?
Five bonded layers: a UV topcoat, a transparent wear layer, a printed decorative film, a rigid core of limestone powder and PVC resin, and an optional IXPE backing pad. The core is the structural part and the wear layer is the part that determines how long the surface lasts.
Should I order a 0.3mm or 0.5mm wear layer?
0.3mm suits general residential rooms and light offices. Specify 0.5mm for commercial floors, entrances, and anywhere grit is tracked in from outside. Wear layer thickness, not core thickness, is what sets the service life of the printed surface.
Which plank size should I choose?
1213 x 177mm is the standard and suits most residential rooms. 935 x 144mm is better for small rooms, hallways and stairs, where a full-length plank creates excess offcut. Decide from the dimensions of the largest continuous space on the project.
Do I need the IXPE backing pad?
It reduces impact noise and softens the feel underfoot, and it is pre-attached at the factory so there is no separate underlay step on site. If the planks come with a pad fitted, do not add another underlay on top, since a soft compressible layer beneath a rigid core is what causes joints to open.
Can it be laid over existing flooring?
Yes, over most hard, flat surfaces including tile and vinyl. Grout lines need filling first to create a level base, and any loose or hollow tiles have to come up. The rigid core bridges small irregularities, but it does not tolerate a genuinely uneven substrate.
Is it suitable for commercial use?
With the 0.5mm wear layer, yes. Retail, hospitality and office floors are common applications, and the absence of grout makes maintenance simpler than tile. Commercial warranty terms are confirmed against the specific project, since traffic levels vary widely between a boutique and a shopping centre entrance.
What are the minimum order and payment terms?
Minimum order is one 40HQ container. Payment is 30% in advance with the balance against a copy of the bill of lading at sight, by T/T or L/C. Delivery runs 10 to 25 days after the advance clears, and flooring can be consolidated with PVC wall panels, ceiling boards and profiles in the same container.
