What happens if you don t leave an expansion gap for vinyl flooring?

When installing vinyl flooring, especially floating vinyl flooring, it is crucial to leave an expansion gap. If you don't leave an expansion gap, the following can happen:

Buckling and warping: Vinyl flooring expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. If there is no expansion gap, the floor may not have enough room to accommodate these movements. As a result, the floor may bend, warp, or lift at the edges due to the pressure created by the restricted expansion.

Impaired flatness: Vinyl flooring with no room for expansion may react to moisture in the sublayer or environment. Too much moisture can cause the board to cup, curl up at the edges, or form a crown where the center of the board rises. This unevenness will not only affect the appearance, but also create an unstable surface for walking.

Joint separation: Vinyl flooring often has interlocking edges, and if there is no expansion gap, the joints between the sheets may be stressed. Over time, this can lead to seam separation or gaps between planks, compromising the integrity and visual appeal of the floor. It also increases the risk of moisture intrusion and potential damage to the bottom plate.

Damage to walls and baseboards: When vinyl flooring is installed without expansion joints, it has no room to expand, which creates pressure on the surrounding walls and baseboards. This pressure can cause walls to bend or baseboards to become damaged or fall off.
