SPC flooring earned its reputation on one claim: it doesn't move much. Wood swells and shrinks. Laminate peaks at the joints. Tile cracks when the substrate shifts. SPC, with its limestone-and-PVC core, is closer to stone than to wood in its thermal behavior. But "doesn't move much" is not "doesn't move at all," and the difference between those two statements is where most installation problems live.
What Moves and What Doesn't
SPC expands in heat and contracts in cold. Every rigid flooring material does. The core's limestone content keeps the movement small - roughly half to a third of what laminate does under the same temperature swing - but it is still movement. In a room that goes from 10°C at night to 30°C during the day, a 6-meter run of SPC can shift by about 2 to 3 millimeters. That's negligible if the perimeter gap was left open. It's a problem if the installer pushed the planks tight against the wall because "the gap looked ugly." The gap is the movement budget. Spend it all at installation, and the floor has no room left when the temperature rises. The planks push against each other, the weakest joint lifts, and suddenly the floor has a peak that wasn't there yesterday. The fix is pulling the baseboard and trimming the plank edge, which is easy to describe and tedious to do. Acclimation before installation is the other half of the movement equation. Leave the unopened boxes in the room for 48 hours. This lets the planks reach the room's normal temperature and humidity before they're locked together. A plank that was stored in a cold warehouse and installed immediately will expand as it warms up, and it will do that expanding after it's already locked to its neighbors. Acclimation doesn't stop movement. It just makes sure the movement happens before the joints are permanent.
Underfloor Heat and AC Cycles
SPC works with radiant underfloor heating because its core is thin and thermally conductive. The heat passes through efficiently instead of getting trapped under an insulating layer. The catch is the temperature limit. Most SPC flooring is rated for a maximum surface temperature around 27°C. Exceed that consistently and the core can soften enough to deform under heavy furniture or concentrated loads. The heating system's thermostat, not the floor, controls this. Set the system to the floor's rating and the floor does fine. Crank it because the room feels cold and the floor may remember the experience permanently.
Air conditioning cycles are less dramatic. The temperature swing between AC-on and AC-off is usually within 5°C to 8°C, well within what SPC handles without visible change. The bigger variable in air-conditioned spaces is humidity, not temperature. Rapid dehumidification when AC kicks in can shrink wood subfloors slightly, which changes the support under the SPC. The SPC itself doesn't care about the humidity change. The subfloor might.
When the Temperature Actually Wins
SPC has a temperature window where it behaves predictably: roughly 15°C to 27°C in normal use. Outside that window, things change. Sustained heat above 35°C, the kind you get in a sunroom with floor-to-ceiling glass and no shade, can soften the wear layer enough that a heavy object left in one spot for hours leaves a shallow dent. The dent doesn't recover when the temperature drops. Sustained cold below about 5°C makes the core less flexible, and a sharp impact - a tool dropped from ladder height, a heavy pot - can crack a plank rather than bounce off it. These are edge cases for most indoor installations. They're Tuesday in an unheated cabin or a glass-walled conservatory. The material limits are not defects. They're the boundaries of what SPC was designed to handle, and knowing where those boundaries sit is more useful than being told the floor handles everything.
For a typical indoor installation with stable heating and cooling, SPC will handle seasonal temperature swings without visible change. The floor moves. The gap absorbs the movement. The baseboard covers the gap. Nobody notices anything. That's the whole design.

Q1: Can SPC go in an unheated sunroom?
A: It depends on the temperature range. If the room stays between 5°C and 35°C year-round, SPC will work with a properly sized perimeter gap. If it drops below freezing in winter or bakes above 40°C in summer, the material is outside its design window and failures become more likely. For extreme sunroom conditions, tile or concrete may be the safer choice.
Q2: Will furniture in direct sun damage the floor underneath?
A: Direct sun through glass can heat the floor surface well above the room's air temperature. A dark rug or a piece of furniture with a solid base can trap that heat and create a localized hot spot. Over time, this may cause slight discoloration or softening. Area rugs in sun-exposed zones should be light-colored, and furniture pads help distribute weight if the floor gets direct midday sun.
Q3: Does the temperature rating change with plank thickness?
A: Thicker planks, 6.5 mm and above, have slightly more thermal mass and resist short-term temperature swings better than 4 mm or 5 mm planks. The maximum temperature rating doesn't change with thickness, but the floor's reaction time to temperature changes does. Thicker is more forgiving of rapid fluctuations.
