Consequences of laying SPC on an uneven floor.

May 27, 2024

If you carefully deliver the SPC flooring, let it sit before installing it, and leave gaps between the wall and the floor, the floor will last for many years. But there is another important detail that is often forgotten - checking the base for unevenness. We'll tell you what can happen if you forget to check the base for defects.

If you carefully deliver the SPC flooring, let it sit before installing it, and leave gaps between the wall and the floor, the floor will last for many years.

Why should the base be level?

Laying the coating on an uneven base will lead to two troubles:

Damage to the locks that secure the plates to each other.
Deflection of the coating where there are irregularities.

This happens due to the voids that appear in places of unevenness and depressions. These voids cause uneven load distribution.

At first it will appear as a squeak. You might even think that the floor is "grinding in", but this is not so. There is a real destruction of the floor covering that you laid so carefully.

That's why it's so important to take the preparation phase seriously. Styling is only half the battle.

How to check the levelness of the base

The maximum permissible difference in height of the base surface is two millimeters by two meters. If the value is greater, then you need to correct the situation, and then start laying.

Levelness is checked using a building level, which is applied to the base in various places. The distortion of the water bubble indicates that the base is uneven.

How to level the base

The type of work depends on the level of unevenness

Microscopic irregularities are neutralized by an insulating substrate, which restrains small loads and takes the form of the irregularities. The built-in substrate is already included in the SPC coating from ALTA STEP.
Small depressions and holes are filled with putty. A self-leveling mixture works well.
Sagging and bumps are removed with chisels and hammer drills.
More severe defects and irregularities are eliminated by applying a floating screed .

Do not forget that before laying you need to not only check the base for unevenness, but also inspect it for moisture levels and remove any small debris.

If you do all this and follow the preparation tips , then the flooring will last for several decades without any hint of wear.
