Is it better to lay SPC along or across the room?

May 27, 2024

There are many types of flooring, but the two most popular are lengthwise and crosswise. We tell you what these types of styling are and which method is best to choose in a given situation.

Laying SPC along the room

With this installation, SPC plates are mounted with the long side along the light from the window.

The plates are laid in the direction of light from the window. This is laying along, it is also longitudinal.

The plates are laid in the direction of light from the window. This is laying along, it is also longitudinal.
Features of longitudinal laying:
"Invisible" chamfer. When laying longitudinally, the recesses between the plates are visually reduced, and the entire floor turns into a continuous, smooth canvas.
Saving material. When laying longitudinally, it will be possible to lay the floor almost without unnecessary undercuts.
Easy to install. Measurements need to be taken less frequently, just like cutting plates. This installation saves a lot of effort.
Lengthening the room. Long plates located along the room visually lengthen its space.

Laying SPC across a room

With this installation, SPC plates are mounted with the long side across the light from the window.

The plates are laid across the light from the window. This is laying across.

The plates are laid across the light from the window. This is laying across.

Features of transverse laying:

Emphasizing the chamfer. Cross laying makes the recesses between the plates more visible. This makes the floor look more natural.
Expansion of the room. Plates located across the window visually expand the space of the room.
Labor intensity. Cross laying takes more time and effort than longitudinal laying. This is due to the fact that you have to cut and measure a larger number of plates.
Overuse of material. The need for material for transverse laying is higher due to the larger amount of waste compared to longitudinal laying.

Which method should I choose?

More often, plates are laid longitudinally: this is faster and requires less material.

But sometimes it makes sense to choose a transverse laying - for example, if you want the material to look more natural. The light that falls on the transverse installation makes the chamfer more visible. This flooring resembles natural wood. It also makes sense to choose transverse installation if you need to visually expand the room.

It all depends on your goals. If you want to lay the floor as a single sheet, quickly and with greater savings, choose longitudinal installation. It is worth choosing a transverse one if you need to emphasize the recesses between the plates and you need to visually expand the room.
